Happy Birthday Jonah!

May 21st, 2008 by Mariah

Happy 4th Birthday Jonah Cole Hussey! Auntie Ryah, Uncle Shaun, Brandon and Tyler enjoyed sharing your special day with you! We loved going to the zoo together on Saturday and our family day on Sunday!

For those of you who have not yet had the privilege to know Jonah, I am saddened for you! He is such a special little guy! He has a super sweet laugh, a smile that can take your breath away and many days he has a very cute comment like only a 4 year old can. During our zoo trip to celebrate his birthday here is what he told me.. “Auntie Ryah, you’re pretty.” I said thank you. Jonah asked, “What is that stuff on your lips?” “It is lipstick” I replied. “It makes you pretty.”

I would recommend following the link to the Hussey family blog to hear the pirate in the potty story. Very cute! http://jor983.vox.com/library/post/favorite-jonah-quote-for-the-week.html

Anyway, in honor of your 4th birthday Jonah we wish you a very happy birthday. Thank you for the privilege of spending the weekend with you! We pray for God’s richest blessings for your life. We pray that you love the Lord your God with all of your heart and with all of your soul and with all of your mind; now and for eternity. You are a huge blessing to our family. We love you!

Happy Birthday!

Salt Lake

May 19th, 2008 by Mariah

Things around the Buck household have been a bit stressful lately. We have had struggles w/ health, our business, and when it rains it pours! Anyway, we decided it was time to get out of here for a couple of days. Shaun, Brandon, Tyler and I had a layover in Salt Lake City, Utah last year during our trip to Disney World. It looked so beautiful from the airport that we have wanted to go and visit ever since. So, that is where we decided to go. It is about a 5 hour drive from Meridian. We left Wednesday morning about 10:00am and came home late Friday afternoon.

We had a great time. We visited the Hoggle Zoo. It is by far the best zoo we’ve been to so far! We even saw a rare white alligator. There are only 10 in the world.

We also visited the Mormon temple and temple square. It was so beautiful! There are a ton of pictures. I thought it appropriate to share the lot of them. Temple Square is the location of the Salt Lake City Temple and all of the visitors centers, museums of church history and art centers. The area is about 3 blocks by 4 blocks. Maybe even 5 blocks! It was huge. The temple itself was one of the more magnificent sights I have seen. After touring I was left with a aching sadness for all of the lost souls that temple square represented. It was unbelievable the blaspheme that was on display. Yet, little to no substance in regards to Mormonism. There were many statues and small posters emphasizing the importance of family. You were reminded every few minutes that you could be with your family forever.

This is a picture of where a Mormon is baptised. I find it interesting that they are surrounded by a herd of golden calf’s!

I even had the pleasure/disgust of overhearing a young woman leading a private tour. This young woman was leading an older woman on a tour of Temple Square. The older woman asked the simple question, “Why Mormonism?” The young woman did her best to describe through her heavy accent that she has left behind all of her family in France to become a missionary. Apparently, working as a tour guide at the temple fulfills some of the works required to earn your way to heaven. Anyway, this young girl told the older woman that this was the only thing that made sence. No other religion made any sence. And that it why she was compelled to leave everyone she loves to come to Salt Lake City, Utah and share her faith.

(Above are pictures of “God” looking down on his creation after creating the heavens and the earth.)

That was it. Nothing more, nothing less. I understand that there is not much to say about this fractured and broken systems of beliefs - called LDS or Mormonism. But I felt so saddened about this response. I, personally, am not the most eloquent in speech. But if someone asked my why I was a Christian; I couldn’t possibly sum it up in 30 seconds. I would be compelled to share Gods love, Christ’s amazing sacrifice, forgiveness… salvation! I would HAVE to share in detail each of these life giving truths! As much as a person would listen. I could not be content with an answer of - it just makes sense.

Hang on a sec while I climb down from my soap box…

Ok, I am back. :) Well, as I have said, I completely enjoyed the beauty of Temple Square. And at the same time it left me so saddened.

On our way home to Idaho, we happened upon an air force base. They had a free, super cool, air museum. It was outdoors. They had jets, planes and even old missiles. The guys really liked it!

We enjoyed the family time together. I, personally, was not quite ready to return to reality.. but here we are. The mini-vacation was short and sweet. I would say that is was too short but very sweet! I love my family and I enjoy it so much when we have long stretches of quality family time!

Big Boy Bed

May 17th, 2008 by Mariah

It is official, Tyler now sleeps in a big boy bed. He has been in his bed for about 2 weeks now. (I think) We still have just a mattress on the floor. Soon I intend to ask Shaun to build his head board and foot board so it is a real bed. Until then..

Happy Birthday Brandon!!

May 13th, 2008 by Mariah

Sunday, May 11th was Brandon’s 12th birthday. We celebrated with a family day together with the Husseys. We made a big turkey and mashed potato dinner. Brandon chose 2 desserts and since it was also Mother’s Day, we agreed. For dessert, we had better than anything cake and an ice cream sandwich cake. YUMMMMM!

Brandon’s most favorite gifts were Mario Kart for the Wii and his trampoline. Hopefully we can pick the trampoline up today. We had to go to great lengths to have the last trampoline shipped from Idaho City. But we did it! Brandon had no idea and he was sooo excited.

The details of the trampoline are this: Shaun and I have been talking about getting him one for his birthday for some time now. But we couldn’t buy it too early otherwise Brandon would find out. So last week Shaun and Brandon had a “Daddy and Brandon date.” They went out to lunch at Sam’s Club, gassed the van and walked around Sam’s Club. Shaun searched the store but didn’t see anymore trampolines. So, with Brandon by his side, he walked up to the customer service counter and asked, “Where can I find one of those big trampolines?” Brandon got really excited. That was until he heard the response. The lady at the counter said that they were sold out and wouldn’t get anymore. What a great surprise!

So The last week+ has been spent on the phone in search of a trampoline. But in the mean time, we had Brandon convinced that there was no chance he was getting one. hehe. Then he could be surprised all over again on his birthday. It worked. (the things parents do for their kids!)

Brandon and his cousins played Mario Kart and played outside. All in all Brandon had a great day!

The Mother’s Day part of the day was nice. It did prove to be a hard day for me emotionally but I enjoyed the company of my hubby, my kids and the Hussey family. Shaun coined a new term for our two families.. the Bucksseys. We had many laughs about that one! Shaun and the boys gave me a patio set for Mothers Day. I am sooo excited about it as I have been wanting one since we moved into this house.

I am so thankful for the fact that I got to share the date of Mothers Day together with Brandon’s birthday! Above all else, I couldn’t have asked for a better gift!

Yellow and Red

May 10th, 2008 by Mariah

Tyler is almost 28 months old now. He enjoys learning to count and sing. But one thing that he is teaching himself is his colors. Despite our best efforts at correction, Tyler is convinced that he knows what colors are what, and we do not. He has also decided that anything he loves will be the color yellow. For example, his blue snuggly buddy that he sleeps with he says is his “yellow” buddy. At one time I purchased 5 additional buddies as back-up in case we couldn’t find one. After last year’s trip to Disney World, we are down to 1 buddy.

My worst nightmare is that we lose this buddy and Tyler won’t go to sleep one night. So I bought a buddy at K-Mart that is very similar to the one he has. Tyler HATES it! In fact yellow has become the color of love for Tyler, and red is the color of things he hates. He calls the new buddy that I bought his RED buddy. He cries when he sees it and says “No red buddy mama!!”

Yesterday after his bath, he discovered some interesting things on his chest. “Mommy what’s dat?” he asked. I told him those are your nipples. “What color mama?” I said your nipples are red. “No mommy, my yellow piples.” hehe. He’s trying. I guess he loves his nipples since he says they are yellow.

The other things that he has deemed yellow are:

  • yellow cheese (cheddar, that one is close)
  • yellow cup (his brother’s green coffee cup that says Brandon on the front)
  • yellow blanket (his new red and black Lightning McQueen comforter)
  • yellow bugs (any bug he sees - he LOVES bugs!)

We will add to the list as more yellow things appear in our household.. We are hopeful that no additional RED things show up! Yellow good. Red bad!

Garden Day 1

May 5th, 2008 by Mariah

Well we finally broke ground on our vegetable garden! Tasha actually put the bug in my ear about starting one. She was telling me about the reasons she wanted to do one and I started talking w/ Shaun about it. For some reason, I thought Shaun would say no. But he was all for it. Then I thought Brandon would not want to do it with me. He was all for it too! In fact, Brandon told me that having his own garden was something he had always wanted to do. That was all I needed to hear. We are now officially the Gardening Buck’s.

Today after church and after putting Tyler down for a nap, Brandon and I snuck outside and broke ground! It was exciting! We chose an area of our yard that needed to be re-sodded. Instead of sod we will have squash, zuccini and a bunch of other goodies. Here is what the space looked like before we started.

We worked for about an hour and we were able to clear most of the space. We were basically digging up the sod. Some areas were easier than others. But we are making progress. Brandon is super excited about it. Hopefully we will be able to finish clearing tomorrow or the next day and begin working the soil over with some fertilizer. Then a plantin’ we will go, a plantin’ we will go, hi ho zucchini-o, a plantin’ we will go!

Potty Training - Again

May 4th, 2008 by Mariah

Well we are on attempt #2 on the potty training. Tyler was showing many of the “signs” of being ready and so here we go again. Day one was undies. Tyler was so excited to have big boy undies that he wouldn’t settle for wearing just one pair. He wanted to wear the entire pack of 6. So here he is with six pairs of undies on.

We have been at it now for a week. We gave up the undies after several loads of laundry. We are doing the pull up thing. That has been going well. We aren’t there yet, but Tyler is well on his way!
